Did Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs scare anyone else????
Dade, Matia & I had a movie night. We had all seen parts of this movie, but we had never sat down to watch the whole thing. The first time I put part of it on for the kids Dade started crying and begged me to turn it off, Matia was engrossed though, so I figured how scary could it be.
Well, it's not really THAT scary, but I see where kids can be daunted by the whole thing. I saw references to many of the "end of the world" and action packed "thiller" movies that would help this cartoon appeal to the adult audience, but could really be scary to kids who don't get the parody that is being presented. Independence Day, Matrix, Armageddon, and a few others were well represented.
Now that we've watched it I'd say my kids are to young for this movie. They were caught up in the chaotic spectacle, and they did like the idea of it snowing ice cream, but beyond that they couldn't really relate to the story or the characters. The moral themes of "be yourself, be unique" and "too much of a good thing is a bad thing" were probably lost on my kids. Of course they are going to be themselves, who else would they be? They might relate to the "Too Much" theme if I talked to them about their toys, they live that dilemma to be certain, but I think the gluttony emphasis is pretty much lost on them a this age. Also the love interest, and liking some one as more than a friend is not a concept that 3 & 4 year olds grasp, nor should they IMO. I thought it would have been ok for the characters to like each other and be friends and just leave it at that. A little less smooching or attempted smooching please! I think there would be some good discussion there for a 6 or 7 year old, and they might appreciate more of the humor. I definitely appreciated it more than my kids, but I'm not anxious to watch it again. This is not a movie that I will put on over and over for the kids, and I doubt they will ask for it. I would be interested in reading the book that it is based on. I get the impression that it is nothing like the movie, and I'd be interested to find out the morale emphasis in the book, and compare it with "Hollywood's" interpretation. It might be fun to do a theme day and make some of the food to go with the story. Ok, now I'm getting ahead of myself.
Anyone have any other kids movies picks that we should try out? I'm really enjoying the cuddle time and the popcorn that goes along with a movie night, nothing beats it. Some of our favorites are Up, Happy Feet, Surfs Up (not my fav, but Dade loves it), Alvin & the Chipmunks (animated film), and Monster's Inc. Help us add to our collection

Dr Struggles
So I need to find a doctor. Ugh. This is a chore for me. I rarely go to the doctor, I've been so blessed with good health that I get down right ornery when I have to deal with the whole health care process. With a baby on the way it seems that I should get on with this chore, but I have an inkling that it is not going to be a pleasant or easy process. Here's what tipped me off...
Today I decided to call one of my friend's doctors office to see if they would accept a new patient. This Dr. only deals with prenatal care and post delivery for 2 weeks. So when I called and asked if they would take on a new patient I was immediately told no. I asked if they recommended any other doctors, and was given the name of another clinic. As I was about to hang up the receptionist asked if I was pregnant. I said yes, to which she said, "oh that's different. We'll take you if you're pregnant, but you have to be referred first." I told her I didn't have a doctor to refer me and asked if I could see a Dr. at a Mediclinic to get my referral, um no they don't take Mediclinic patients. Ok, could my previous Dr. give me a referral, um no it has to be someone who will continue my care when they are done with me. Ok. So, next I called the clinic they recommended and yes I could see a doctor within the next week, but if I miss or cancel an appointment it is going to cost me $40! Yeesh, I know their time is important, but golly! My life is so unstructured that there is no way I'm going to gamble $40 every time I make a doctor's appointment. So I called the local clinic, who I had heard were not accepting new patients, and wept a little on the phone and was able to secure an appointment for a referral. I'm not sure if this will help me, because they are not taking me on as a patient, so the prenatal clinic might not accept the referral from a Dr. who will not be continuing my care. All these conversations took the better part of an hour, and was more than a little frustrating for me.
I want to be a good mom and get good care for my baby, but when is the system just not worth dealing with. I feel like I'd be better off just to drop in at a medi clinic at the normal times for check ups. I've had babies before and I know what tests I need and about when they need to be done. Do I have to have a specific Doctor to check in with? As far as delivery goes I am not guaranteed to have the services of my doctor anyway, and for the most part I will be spending my time with a nurse or nurses that I have never met before any way. Why all the rigamarole? Why all the running around? Why do I have to rearrange my life to see someone who usually tells me what I already know anyway? Will I be prevented from having an ultra sound or hearing my baby's heart beat because I don't have an allegiance with a specific doctor? I don't know, maybe, but many babies around the world are born with out any kind of prenatal care. Is it irresponsible of me to consider not seeing a specific doctor, but dropping in off the street and taking a number? Is it low brow, or hilly billyish of me? I don't know.
I do know that my blood pressure definitely climbs whenever I deal with clinics. I also know that I will be on the road of at least one of my trimesters, and there is even a small chance that I won't be any where near home when I go into labour. What is the point of jumping through all the hoops? Just wondering.

Nothing to say
I haven't had much to say lately. This blog is supposed to be about me learning how to be content with myself and with my situations whatever they may be, but I'm finding I have very little to comment on. Usually I default to my kids, because they are way more interesting than I am, and they truly are a big part of my identity right now. But really, I'm wracking my brain for some new material.... I got nothin.
Lately I've been:
Lately I've been:
- Working hard to keep my grocery budget down and my menus healthy
- Trying to get my house work under control, but failing miserably
- Sleeping as much as I can, whenever I can.
- Subbing off and on as the opportunities arise.

Happy News
My happy news is that I'm feeling very sick lately, I'm making a list of names I like, we're planning renovations to make the kids big room into 2 little rooms, I'm in the market for a new doctor....
Yep, you guessed it. We are expecting McKenzie baby #3!!
This news really hasn't come as a shock to anyone, but it is something to be excited about anyway. I'd be a lot more excited if I could be in an up right position without feeling like my stomach is in my throat. I'm counting down the weeks until I get to the good stage and start feeling more like myself again. In the mean time crackers and water and spearmint gum seem to help a little. I've been sleeping a lot too, it's what I do. I'd rather sleep than do anything else, so I know I've been fairly absent from the blogging scene, but I can't blog and sleep at the same time...
So look for me in about 5 weeks when I get a burst of energy (hope hope hope).

Happy New Year
None of us were party animals this New Years. I was in bed long before the fireworks started. I have made no resolutions this year. It's just a wait and see kind of year I think. Here are a few more pics from the end of 2009 and beginning of 2010...
